Olutoyin Olufemi Uko is a Partner and Head of Chambers, Lagos Office of the Firm.
An indigene of Akwa Ibom State, he was born on the 25th April, 1968 in Lagos, Lagos State of Nigeria.
He graduated from the Obafemi Awolowo University in 1990 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in December 1991. He commenced his Legal Career as a State Counsel, Lagos State Ministry of Justice. He went on to work in several other Law Firms including AELEX where he was the Head of Litigation, before joining the Law Firm of JK Gadzama and Partners.
He has attended several seminars and workshops, amongst which is a 4-week Online Training Course organized by The United Nations Institute for Training and Research on International Negotiations, in November, 2007.
He specializes in Litigation, Taxation and Competition Law. He has participated in handling a number of contentious high profile litigations including:
1. NNPC –V- B.C.E ENGINEERING LIMITED (A claim involving the sum of US$22M)
2. FRN –V- CHEVRON NIG. LTD & ORS (A criminal matter wherein senior partners of an international auditing firm were charged with negligently approving the financial statements of a multinational oil company.
3. L.S.B.I.R. –V-. SPDC (A claim of almost N200M by the Lagos State Tax Authority as unpaid arrears of Pay As You Earn Income Tax against a multinational oil company).
4. FRN –V-OLABODE GEORGE & 5 ORS (A criminal matter wherein former board members of the Nigerian Ports Authority were charged to Court for inflating and splitting contracts in order to defraud the government and disobedience to lawful orders etc)
In the aforementioned matters, he was either the Lead Counsel or played vital support role as a member of the team that handled the matters.
Apart from his wide litigation experience, he was also at one time or the other, an associate editor of a monthly law report published in Northern Nigeria[The Supreme Court of Nigeria Judgments). He also had a 5 years stint as a part-time lecturer in Law Courses where he taught students preparing for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria [ICAN] professional qualifying examinations. He also taught Law at a satellite campus of the Obafemi Awolowo University. This satellite campus was based in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria.
He is a member of both the Nigerian Bar Association and the International Bar Association. He is also an associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria [CITN] He is multilingual as he speaks English, French and a couple of Nigerian local dialects.
He is married to Olubunmi Nicole Uko and they are blessed with three sons.
